(chi.now&then#56 - March 14 , 2004)
It is with the deepest possible sadness that I feel compelled to comment upon the ongoing cycle of violence, fostered and encouraged by the illegally elected leader of our government (don't forget who first gave weapons to Osama bin Laden). My most heartfelt sympathies go out to the victims of the terrorist attacks in Madrid and their families, and all the other victims of this mindless world-wide violence. Where is the wisdom and strength to find a solution more civilized than endless barbaric retaliation? - "we" have put ourselves on "their" level, when diplomacy has not been exhausted.
Maybe you believe in a Higher Power and maybe you don't, but one thing is certain: there is no God of any of this planet's religions who says to the believers "Go out and slaughter innocents in My Name!" Any of this world's leaders who initiate, advocate, promote, or support the massacre of innocent victims and still claim to be religious, belongs to the church of Satan - bin Laden, Hussein, Milosevic, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld all bathe in the blood of innocents, and Idi Amin and Hitler before them. Yet we bear partial responsibility because we let them make decisions for us, acting in our name. We allow them to do great evil, and we think that someone else will put things right... eventually.
In one week, there will be a protest in downtown Chicago to mark the anniversary of George W. Bush's unprovoked invasion of Iraq. Mayor Daley has denied issuance of a permit, even though no commuters will be affected, March 20 this year falling on a Saturday. Please note, in the Little Prince's Chicago, permission is required for 'free speech'; only allowed if it does not inconvenience weekend shoppers, only approved during certain hours, at out-of-the-way locations, etc. etc. etc. all the mandatory paperwork filed in advance, etc. etc. etc. Imagine what would happen if you asked to dye the river red? no, that privilege is reserved for a far more important cause - something green, but not the environment....
You would think that our mayor would be embarassed by the legacy of the police riots at the 1968 Democratic convention, but instead he has embraced that model, and instructed the police to intimidate instead of protect, and provoke conflict instead of serving the public. Well, you have to remember that he is the only politician in America dumber than George W. Bush.
Last year on March 20, I was standing on the sidewalk at Michigan and Oak with my little hand-made sign that said "Lead U.S. To Peace". I was arrested without being charged, handcuffed as though I was some kind of threat, thrown in the back of a paddy wagon with 27 others, after several hours taken to the far south edge of the city and held in a cell with the same 27 guys, and eventually released the next day. None of us were read our rights, or allowed phone calls, or able to speak to an attorney. There was no property damage to justify the police riot, no violence to vindicate the massive goon-squad in black body armor. A class-action lawsuit against the city is in progress.
Btw: the paddy wagon stopped at Dunkin' Donuts on the way to the station (all that hippie-clubbing is hungry work!).
Maybe you remember our last legally-elected president, who during a time of unprecedented prosperity was almost impeached for lying about a sexual affair. The issues facing us today are far more significant than an extra-marital blow-job. Please come out next Saturday, March 20 and show Richard J. Daley and George W. Bush that you support FREE SPEECH & WORLD PEACE. Thank you.
